River Don poems at faethm

Poetry exploring the dark side of the river Don in Sheffield written and read by Carolyn Waudby formed part of the four-day faethm event at Kelham Island Museum.

Carolyn returned to the museum, where the Cradle of Fire film was launched, to give a reading of poems she wrote after searching for the source of the river on the moors and walking the Sheffield stretch for her project Dark River.

The work draws on locations on the river including Wardsend Cemetery and Sanderson’s Weir, place names, mythology and the folklore of plants growing on the river bank.

Eco-poet Professor Harriet Tarlo’s work was also featured as part of commissioned works for the event.

Carolyn said: “It was a privilege to take part in faethm – an artistic and scientific reminder of the importance and fragility of the river Don and its tributaries, which have been central to the life of the city for centuries.

“It was very special to see the work of colleagues at Sheffield Hallam University, some of whom I met for the first time at the event. Curator and producer Amy Carter-Gordon did an amazing job”.
