Cradle of Fire – The Album

Image: Diana Scarborough

Following the success of the Cradle of Fire film, composer and musicologist Kim Cunio launched The Album – soundtracks from the film including #poetry, new compositions and artwork plus bonus tracks of industrial #sound recordings made at Kelham Island and Abbeydale Industrial Hamlet, #Sheffield.

Listen to cannon chanting, the sounds of the #River Don Engine and soprano Heather Lee adding a new dimension to Carolyn Waudby’s poems.

Original new artwork for each track has been created by multimedia artist and maker of the Cradle of Fire film Diana Scarborough.

Kim, who masterminded all the tracks, has explored a surprising variety of melodies, rhythms and techniques, blending in humour and a compelling touch of mischief. He gives us creaking doors, plays coaxes an untuned piano into relinquishing an atmospheric tune, and turns his hand to a bit of water pulsing.

He was living in Australia when he started the project. Kim is now based in New Zealand, where he is a Professor, and Head of School at Te Kōkī, The New Zealand School of Music, within Te Wāhanga Aronui Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.

He and Heather Lee spent a week in Sheffield making recordings at the two Sheffield museum sites.

The album, free to download with donations for individual tracks.
